LCL – (less than container load) generally used for smaller ocean freight shipments not requiring the full capacity of an ocean container – Usually less than 20 CBM LCL shipments are crated for protection and consolidation.
FCL – (Full Container Load) 20′ Containers, 40′ Container and 40′ HC Containers
A common question we get asked is if its better to ship by FCL (full container load) or LCL (less than container load)? There are a few factors to consider:
LCL – For smaller orders,or for clients with limited order space.
Is a great option for smaller orders or smaller relocation’s and when you don’t have the volume to accommodate a full container, in this case it makes sense to use LCL. LCL lets you ship in smaller volumes so that you can keep your inventory lean. Instead of purchasing large quantities from suppliers, you can use LCL to keep a steady flow of inventory and top up on orders. LCL is also a great option when sampling products from Bali suppliers before placing a larger full order.
FCL may be cheaper than LCL
LCL costs more than FCL per cubic meters (cbm) of freight. There is a break-even point, generally around 10-15 cbm at which the price of a large LCL load equals the price of a 20’ FCL container; this will vary depending on where you’re shipping from and the current state of the ocean freight market. When you request a quotation the SHIPPING FROM BALI team will take this into account when advising you whether to ship FCL or LCL and will always recommend the cheaper option.
Unless you have a handling agent you have dealt with in the destination country for many years, we recommend you always ship Door to Door. Most Bali freight forwarders ship to “PORT ONLY” and unfortunately inexperienced shippers can be caught out with high destination charges on the cargo arrival such as port charges, clearance charges and unknown inspections for personal effects. The term to port can be confusing for some shippers as they can assume they can simply collect their cargo from the port which is not the case.
